Additional ways to look for Scholarships opportunities:

  • If your student is active in a local organization, holds a job, community activities, sports, church, etc.  I recommend looking to see if they offer scholarships.
  • Local foundations, civic clubs, and businesses  Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, banks/credit unions, and community foundations occasionally offer scholarships with lower competition.
  • Many in-state colleges automatically consider entering freshmen for merit awards or have separate applications. Many Minnesota State universities have GPA-based or major-specific awards.
  • If they know what college/ what career they want to go to, college programs often offer scholarships specifically to help students.
  • Check with the parent/guardians’ place of employment. Many companies have scholarship opportunities for employees’ children.

Tips for earning outside scholarships

  • Start early when searching for scholarships and continue to search for new ones. Scholarships get posted throughout the year.
  • Stay organized by tracking deadlines, award amounts, and requirements in a spreadsheet, and set calendar reminders.
  • Request letters of recommendation early from people who can genuinely speak to your strengths (avoid family members).
  • Apply for scholarships that require essays, as they often have less competition.
  • Look for awards connected to your extracurricular activities and interests.
  • Keep your social media professional, as committees may review it.
  • Be confident in highlighting your achievements, leadership, perseverance, and community involvement.
  • Most importantly, apply! Even if you’re unsure—since many scholarships go unclaimed each year.
